TIL something cool. The Mississippi Department of Transportation has a safety protocol in place to turn highways into one-way evacuation routes in the case of a hurricane. This doubles the capacity of an important bottleneck.
I live in Montreal and I’ve noticed that law enforcement here does something similar. Police cruisers regularly use bike lanes to get around car traffic.
Road infrastructure is slow to change. Protocols can be quickly summoned to handle uncommon traffic flow patterns.
