I led a session on a topic I’ve been thinking about and working on for a couple of years now: Thinking of the world in terms of kits and configurations, as a process of continuous configuration and reconfiguration rather than purely in terms of irreversible/entropic creative destruction. Part of the session was me doing a workshopping level fly-through of my slides (mostly lots of examples of various kinds of kits). The discussion was on the meta of kits.
In attendance: @Venkat, @strangeattractor, @davidtlang, @chenoehart @jdbb @thewanderingeditor @Timber @tdeme and I can’t recall who else. Tag yourself if you were there, and feel free to add comments to this brief note if you have thoughts related to the discussion.
Slides from Venkat. These are updated from first version delivered as an informal guest lecture to the Antikythera program… it’s an ongoing work in progress and I haven’t yet landed on a definitive version of this… I’d like to get there and do a proper essay and deliver a talk at a suitable event.
Some other stuff that I’ve been thinking about and need to fold in – the idea of distributed systems as a kind of geology, within which composable systems could be called “legolith” (inspired by Lego). Here’s a farcaster cast I did about this.
Some references that came up (can’t recall who shared what)
Book on improvisation (can’t recall who brought it up)
